Ballot Pedia provides an in-depth, short definition of what a fact checker is and does. Fact checking is extremely modern. The goal of fact checking if done successfully is to be unbiased and accurate in order to keep in-fighting and wrong information about big topics from being spread and used (BallotPedia). A true/false system is used when writing and organizing articles created by fact-checkers (BallotPedia). They will provide background information and context of what they are referring to.
The historical use of fact checkers is to correct names, dates and the like (BallotPedia). Fact checking started to take on a life of its own in the definition we know of now in the '80s and '90s (BallotPedia). Previously referred to as Adwatch or truth-squadding (BallotPedia). Fact checking soon became its own branch of journalism with the rise of Factcheck.org.

Typical uses of fact-checkers/ing Provided by Ballot Pedia:

  • Political
  • Internet hoaxes
  • Urban legends
  • Memes
  • Writer's works
  • Other things that can be fact checked

4 Things that you may want to know about Fact Checking from Media Bistro's Sharon Bloyd-Peshkin:
